Fire Meets the Deep: A Once in a Generation Moon

Two worlds colliding — for the first time since 1988

There are cosmic moments that feel significant, and then there are the ones that stop you in your tracks. Tonight is the latter. For the first time in 38 years, the full moon falls exactly on Beltane — May 1st — and it rises in the sign of Scorpio. The last time this happened was 1988. For the past several days my son has been saying to me "Mom I feel like something BIG is coming." If you've been feeling the same, it's because something enormous is shifting beneath the surface of your life lately. This alignment is likely part of why.

The moon follows a roughly 19-year cycle, but a true full moon landing on the exact calendar date of May 1st is rarer still. 2007 came close — the full moon fell on May 2nd, so it didn't count. This year, there's no rounding needed. The Sun in Taurus sits directly opposite the Moon in Scorpio right at Beltane's peak, creating what astrologers are calling a profound soul-level reset.

Here in the desert Southwest, where the heat of a Mesa spring is already calling us into summer, the timing carries a particular resonance. We know fire. We know what it means to be stripped down to what's essential. Tonight, the sky is asking the same of us.

"What makes this moon so striking isn't just what it is — it's the contrast of what it's asking us to hold at the same time."

Fire and water, light and shadow

Beltane is one of the most joyous celebrations on the Wheel of the Year — a fire festival that honors fertility, creative life force, the sacred union of the divine masculine and feminine, and the uninhibited pleasure of being alive in a body. It's the moment spring cracks fully open into summer. Beltane energy is warm, sensual, celebratory, and unapologetically wild.

A full moon in Scorpio is something else entirely. Scorpio rules the underworld — death, rebirth, hidden truths, deep intimacy, and the shadows we quietly manage so we don't have to look at them directly. When the moon is full in this sign, it shines its unblinking light on precisely what we've been avoiding. Scorpio doesn't negotiate. It asks: what needs to die here so something real can be born?

Beltane's gifts

Creative fire, sensuality, celebration, fertility, the courage to desire openly, and deep connection to your aliveness

Scorpio's gifts

Radical honesty, shadow integration, transformation, deep intimacy, and release of what no longer serves

The alchemy

Together they create a crucible — Beltane's fire burns what Scorpio's moonlight illuminates, leaving only what is truly yours

A rare bonus: Venus–Saturn

An exceptionally tight Venus–Saturn sextile anchors tonight's intensity into lasting form — what you call in tonight, you're calling in for the long haul

The paradox here is the point. Beltane invites you to celebrate and open. The Scorpio full moon insists you be honest about what you're carrying first. You may find yourself craving deeper connection while feeling less tolerant of surface-level interactions. You might feel a sudden urgency around what in your life — relationships, habits, patterns of thought — has simply run its course. That discomfort is the invitation.

In my work as a stretch therapist at Health + Healing Studios here in Mesa, I see this dynamic in the body every single day. The places we are tight are often the places we are holding something we haven't yet given ourselves permission to release. This moon is a full-body invitation to do exactly that.

A body-centered ritual for the Beltane full moon in Scorpio

As a stretch therapist, I always come back to the body as the portal. The body holds what the mind tries to rationalize away. This is especially true during intense lunar periods — the nervous system responds to the energetic charge whether we're consciously working with it or not. This ritual is built around that truth, using movement, breath, and physical sensation to help you access the deeper layers of what this moon is asking you to release and reclaim.

What you'll need: a candle (red or deep orange for Beltane), a bowl of water, a piece of paper, and something to write with. Find a quiet space where you can move freely — even a corner of your living room or, if you're lucky enough to have it, outdoor space under the Mesa sky.

Ground and arrive (5 minutes)

Stand barefoot if you can. Take three slow, deliberate breaths — inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 8. Feel the weight of your body, the ground beneath you. Scorpio energy works from the root up; you need to be fully in your body before you can go deep with it. Begin a slow, intuitive body scan from feet to crown, noticing without judgment where you feel tension, numbness, or sensation.

Shadow stretch sequence (10–15 minutes)

Move through the hips, chest, and throat — the areas most linked to emotional holding in the body. Try a deep pigeon pose or figure-four stretch for the hips (we store enormous amounts of grief and old stories here). A supported fish pose or heart-opener for the chest. Slow neck rolls and a lion's breath for the throat. As you hold each stretch, breathe into any tightness and silently ask: what am I carrying here that I'm ready to let go of? Don't force an answer. Be in the question.

Write and name it (5 minutes)

Sit with your paper. Write down — without editing yourself — what you are genuinely ready to release. A fear. A pattern. A relationship dynamic. A story about who you are or what you're capable of. Be specific and be honest. Scorpio rewards radical truth and has no patience for vague intentions. The more truthful you are, the more potent this step becomes.

Burn and wash — fire meets water

Safely burn the paper in your candle flame or a fire-safe bowl. Watch it become ash. This is Beltane fire doing what it does — transforming matter. Then dip your hands in your bowl of water and feel the cool contrast against skin that just held warmth. You are both elements tonight. You can hold the heat of desire and the depth of truth simultaneously. That is the gift of this particular moon.

Call in what you're ready for

With your hands still slightly damp, place them over your heart. Breathe. From this honest, emptied-out place — speak aloud or write one thing you are genuinely calling in. Not what you think you should want. What your body, your deep self, is actually reaching toward. Under tonight's Venus–Saturn sextile, intentions made from this place of integrity carry real staying power. What you plant here has roots.

A closing thought from your Mesa stretch therapist

What the body knows

In my work, we talk often about the difference between tension that protects and tension that imprisons. A muscle braces when it needs to guard something vulnerable. But held long enough, that same bracing becomes a limitation — the very thing that was meant to protect you begins to keep you smaller than you need to be.

This moon is asking us to feel into that distinction in every area of our lives. What are you holding as protection that has quietly become a cage? The fire of Beltane doesn't destroy — it transforms. And the Scorpio moon doesn't punish — it illuminates, so you can finally choose freely.

The last time this alignment of energies was available, the world was on the edge of one of its great openings. History doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes. May we meet this one with the same courage, and may the Mesa desert heat remind you — you were built to metabolize intensity.

"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane
by those who could not hear the music."
— Friedrich Nietzsche
