Ceremonial Cacao vs. Hot Chocolate: What’s the Difference?

When people ask me what cacao is the silly over simplified answer I go with is “super spiritual hot chocolate”. That’s only part of the story though. They both start with the cacao bean, and they both have a way of hugging your soul but that’s about where the similarities end.

Hot chocolate is usually made from cocoa powder, which has had most of its natural fat removed, then mixed with sugar, milk, and flavorings. Delicious? Absolutely. But it’s a treat, sometimes a tradition, but not quite a ritual.

Ceremonial cacao is made from whole cacao beans that are minimally processed and ground into a rich paste, keeping all of the bean’s natural cacao butter. Nothing is stripped away and nothing extra is added. The result is thick, earthy, and deeply nourishing, full of the flavanols, magnesium, and minerals that make cacao so special.

It’s also about intention

For thousands of years, cacao has been honored as a sacred plant in Mesoamerica, shared in ceremony, celebration, and community. It’s deeply grounding and heart opening. When we drink ceremonial cacao, we slow down, sip with intention, and let it open us up to connection, with ourselves, with each other, and with those who came before us.
